Poetry magazine publishes recent MFA graduate

CooXooEii Black, who graduated with an MFA in poetry this year, has had two of the poems from his University of Memphis thesis published in Poetry magazine’s October 2023 issue.

Poetry is one of the country’s leading poetry journals. It has a print circulation of 30,000. On average it prints just 300 poems from the more than 100,000 submitted each year. It was founded in 1912 and is housed in Chicago.

Both of Black’s poems “On Mindfulness” and “Some Notes on Vision” are available to read at www.poetryfoundation.org. His thesis was directed by Marcus Wicker.

CooXooEii Black is a member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe. He is the author of The Morning You Saw a Train of Stars Streaking Across the Sky (Rattle Foundation, 2022). He worked as a senior poetry editor for the Pinch while at the University of Memphis.
